A Star Lost 97% of Its Light for 9 Months — And Astronomers Know Why

Astronomers have confirmed that ASASSN-24fw dimmed by an extraordinary 97% over a period of more than nine months, starting in late 2024 making it one of the longest and deepest stellar eclipses ever recorded. The star, located in the Monoceros constellation, was monitored through sky surveys that track brightness changes in stars over time. The data clearly shows a prolonged and structured drop in light, far beyond what a normal planet could cause. Scientists say the most likely explanation is a massive ringed object passing in front of the star either a brown dwarf or a super Jupiter–type planet. Unlike typical transits that last hours or days, this event stretched across months, pointing to something enormous in size. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Confirmed Dead in US‑Israel Strikes — Family Members Also Reported Killed

Iran’s state television and government‑linked news agencies have confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died following a major military attack carried out as part of coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel. Iranian media report that key members of Khamenei’s family including his daughter, son‑in‑law, and granddaughter were also killed in the same incident.
State broadcaster IRIB announced that Khamenei, aged 86 and the spiritual and political leader of Iran since 1989, died early Sunday morning as a result of the attack. The Iranian government has declared 40 days of public mourning and seven days of national holiday following his death.
According to Fars News Agency and other semi‑official outlets with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the attacks also claimed the lives of several members of the supreme leader’s household. These reports say the family members were killed alongside Khamenei when military strikes hit Tehran.
